The 4 Best Organic Pads, Tampons & Postpartum Recovery Products
Why this matters
In 2020 and 2022, the independent lab Mamavation found indications of PFAS ("forever chemicals") in 22% of tampons tested and 48% of sanitary pads tested — including several brands explicitly marketed as "organic" or "natural." That's the same class of chemicals showing up in tap water and old non-stick pans, but here they're sitting against the most absorbent tissue in your body for hours at a time.
This category matters most for postpartum recovery, when you'll wear pads continuously for weeks, and for return-to-cycle. Pregnancy itself doesn't typically involve these products — but they're essential to plan for before delivery.
What to look for
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton. This is the strictest cotton certification — "made with organic cotton" without GOTS is much weaker.
- No plastic top sheet next to skin — most conventional pads have a plastic layer that adds to PFAS exposure.
- Brand-published independent test results. "PFAS-free" without testing is not a guarantee.
- No fragrance of any kind in feminine care.
What to avoid
- Fragranced products — phthalate carriers and skin irritants.
- Generic "organic" claims without GOTS certification.
- Internal products in the first 6 weeks postpartum — your healthcare provider will say this too. Tampons and cups can introduce bacteria into the still-healing uterus.
Our top picks
1. Natracare Natural Maternity Pads — Score: 86/100
100% certified organic cotton cover, plant-based core, compostable. No PFAS per brand testing, no chlorine bleach, no plastics next to skin. Extra-long size made specifically for postpartum bleeding. Best for the hospital bag and first weeks postpartum.
2. Rael Organic Cotton Cover Period Pads — Score: 78/100
GOTS-certified organic cotton top sheet, plant-based core. Widely available on Amazon and at Target. Best widely-available daily pad.
3. August Organic Cotton Period Pads — Score: 73/100
GOTS-certified, plastic-free wrappers, carbon-neutral. Subscription option. Best for eco-conscious subscription.
4. Cora Organic Cotton Tampons — Score: 71/100 (caution)
GOTS-certified organic cotton. Important context: Mamavation's broader investigation found PFAS even in some "organic" tampons — Cora publicly addresses this and publishes testing, but verify with current lot if uncertain. For return-to-cycle phase only. Best organic tampon, with the caveat above.
What to actually pack for the hospital
- Natracare Natural Maternity Pads — 1–2 packs (you'll bleed heavily for the first week).
- Mesh underwear (the hospital usually provides; pack a couple from home if you want).
- Disposable underwear (Frida Mom makes a good one) for the first few days.
- Peri bottle (the hospital provides; Frida Mom's upside-down version is the bestseller upgrade).
- Witch hazel pads (Tucks) — soothing for tears/hemorrhoids.
- Cold pad/ice packs — Frida Mom makes pre-filled, instant-cold ones.
How long postpartum bleeding lasts
Postpartum bleeding (lochia) typically lasts 4–6 weeks. It's heaviest in the first week, then transitions through pink and yellow phases. Use pads, not tampons or cups, the entire time.
Return to cycle
Most non-breastfeeding parents see their period return 6–8 weeks postpartum. Breastfeeding parents may not see a cycle for 6+ months. When it does come back — that's when an organic cotton tampon makes sense (if you used them pre-pregnancy).

Medical disclaimer: Not medical advice. Do not use internal products (tampons, cups) for postpartum bleeding in the first ~6 weeks — use pads.
