The Best PFAS-Free Leggings & Activewear for Pregnancy
Why your leggings matter
In 2022 and again in 2024, the independent lab Mamavation tested 32 workout legging and yoga pant brands for indications of PFAS ("forever chemicals"). The result:
- 1 in 4 pairs (8 of 32) had detectable fluorine levels — from 10 to 284 ppm.
- PFAS in clothing transfers to skin through sweat and is absorbed.
- Pregnancy raises the stakes — PFAS exposure during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight, immune effects, and high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Some brands you'd assume are clean tested poorly. Some you wouldn't have heard of tested clean. The only reliable signal is independent lab testing.
What to look for
- Independent PFAS testing showing no detectable fluorine.
- GOTS-certified organic materials — strongest fabric certification.
- Brand transparency about supply chain and finish treatments.
What to avoid
- Brands with detected PFAS in independent testing (Lululemon, some Athleta SKUs — see below).
- Vague "PFAS-free" claims without lab data — companies often replaced one PFAS variant with another.
- "Stain-repellent" / "water-repellent" / "sweat-wicking" finishes without specifying the chemistry — these are the most common PFAS hiding spots.
Our top picks (Mamavation-tested clean)
1. Pact Go-To Pocket Legging — Score: 89/100
No detectable fluorine per Mamavation testing. Fair Trade Certified, GOTS-certified organic cotton with elastane. Soft, daily wear focus. Best overall.
2. Mate The Label Organic Stretch Legging — Score: 84/100
GOTS-certified organic cotton + lyocell. No detectable fluorine per Mamavation. Loungy, soft fit. Best for daily / lounge wear.
3. Groceries Apparel B12 Legging — Score: 82/100
USA-made, organic + recycled materials. No detectable fluorine per Mamavation. Smaller brand. Best for USA-made fans.
A warning, not a recommendation
Lululemon Align Pant — Score: 19/100 (AVOID during pregnancy)
We include this because it's the highest-searched legging in the world. Mamavation's testing found indications of PFAS in Lululemon activewear. Lululemon has since added PFAS to its Restricted Substances List and stated they're phasing them out — but consumer-level independent verification of that completion is still pending.
During pregnancy, the cautious choice is to switch. Pact and Mate make daily-wear leggings that are easily as comfortable. Save Lululemon for post-pregnancy if you love the fit.
What about workout intensity?
Cotton-elastane blends (Pact, Mate) are great for walking, prenatal yoga, low-impact pilates — and that's most pregnancy exercise. For higher-intensity work, the trade-off is real: most "compression" performance fabrics get there through finishes that historically used PFAS. Until the synthetic-performance industry catches up, organic cotton blends are the cleaner choice — and most OBs recommend lower-impact exercise during pregnancy anyway.
Beyond leggings
Mamavation's broader textile testing has also covered:
- Sports bras — Pact, Mate, Hanro have tested clean.
- Underwear — Pact organic cotton underwear tests clean.
- Bedding & towels — coming in future expansion of this guide.
